Hi, I’m Penny Holguin, author of the award winning book, ‘Sarah O’Hara ~ Gift of the Fairy Wings’ is the story of Sarah O’Hara, a little bunny who bullies her classmate, Angela. Sarah’s meanness is overcome by Angela’s persistent kindness.
I have two children and like most parents, I’m concerned for their character and well being. It’s my job to help them enter adulthood able and confident. At home they receive love and tremendous support, but as they move through outward spheres of influence, I know they’ll face challenges, including contact with life’s bullies. Telling the Sarah O’Hara story is my way of teaching without lecturing; providing tools for their journey in a fun and entertaining way. It’s my way of sharing with your kids as well. Stay connected by subscribing to my ‘Kindness Rocks’ newsletter where we’ll be actively engaged in community kindness events and sharing information. In the meantime, check out what others have to say about my book and learn more about issues that contribute to the need for it.
“I had to email and tell you what a great response I had to your book. The kids were enthralled by the pictures and the story! Today when they came back to school, they couldn’t wait to look through the pictures. Several children wanted to hear the book again and some said they wanted it for Christmas!”
~ Betsy Mc H., Preschool Teacher and Author
As an author of a childrens book I do readings of Sarah O’Hara ~ Gift of the Fairy Wings and kindness activities at schools with children. I am always asked to come back, not only by the same teachers, but by other teachers who have seen behavioral improvements from classrooms I have visited.
What kind of culture do we want to live in; what type of people do we want our children to be? Here are the facts:
1) Parents are busier than ever and children go unsupervised in front of the television more than 2 hours a day.
2) Producers of reality shows encourage participants to be aggressively combative in order to increase their ratings.
3) The popular kids in preteen sitcoms are the ones with the meanest and snarkiest one liners.
4) Kids as young as 4 are watching preteen sitcoms and reality shows.
When little kids are so impressionable and there are more media reinforcements than ever to thoughtless, aggressive and selfish behavior, how do parents counteract the effects of rampant meanness?
Suicide is now the number one cause of teenage death; with studies linking suicide to bully behavior. My passions run deep to make a difference; to give my kids and your kids a kinder, more loving culture where they can flourish. “Sarah O’Hara ~ Gift of the Fairy Wings” was written to help young children realize that acts of kindness are not only the right choice; but they feel so good to do!
“A delightful story that carries a message of kindness. it encourages and supports a young child’s understanding of others.”
~ Darci Mickle, Elementary School Principal, Cheery Creek School District, Colorado
Like most parents, I wish to see a bright future for my kids. My passions run deep to make a difference. I believe that teaching ‘Perpetual Acts of Kindness’ is what’s needed to thwart the rising tide of ignorance and meanness.
All people respond positively, to acts of love and kindness, but being kind isn’t something children inherently know how to do. It’s a skill developed over time. Even though early learners have a natural desire to please teachers and parents they don’t automatically know how to just do it! “Sarah O’Hara ~ Gift of the Fairy Wings” is a tool for teaching children through story and character.
Through the writing of this book, which is planned as a forthcoming series, and speaking engagements I’m out delivering a message of kindness, one classroom at a time, one school at a time, one conference at a time. I can’t change the world, but I can do my small part to make a difference. By reaching out to you, the parent, grandparent, teacher, child caregiver and asking you to get onboard the kindness train, I know that, together our many seemingly small acts of kindness are much greater than anything I can do on my own.
“Such a magical story of kindness and caring. Children all around the world will be delighted and inspired by this beautiful tale of love and friendship.”
~ Jill McManigal, Cofounder of Kids for Peace
Buy the book for your children. Buy it for a teacher, church, underprivileged classroom or gift. Tell people about it. Read my blog. Spread kindness. Perpetual acts of kindness will ultimately make those around us feel good, leading to more positive social relationships and a heightened sense of self esteem; not only in our children, but in ourselves. Being kind ROCKS!
Acts of kindness create more powerful feelings than acts of meanness, and “Sarah O’Hara ~ Gift of the Fairy Wings” is the perfect book to spread that message!
